Using AI – Artificial Intelligence, Steven Spielberg has made a sci-fi masterpiece in which a married couple wants to deal with the loss of their own son in the future with the help of an adopted android child.

The German-Austrian sci-fi film The Trouble With Being Born from 2021, which 3sat is broadcasting on Saturday, describes a similar story. But the mysterious genre insider tip is not a copybut impresses in its own, disturbing way.

Sci-Fi insider tip on TV: That’s what The Trouble With Being Born is about

The story of the film by director Sandra Wollner lives the artificially created girl Elli (Lena Watson) with her creator Georg (Dominik Warta), whom she calls dad. After an incident, Elli gets lost in the forest and is taken to 70-year-old Anna (Ingrid Burkhard) by a driver. The girl in turn transforms her into her brother Emil, who died 60 years earlier.

The Trouble With Being Born is roughly reminiscent of Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, but is much more profound

At first glance, the initial plot of The Trouble With Being Born is reminiscent of Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece. Wollner’s version of the android story goes even deeper. It quickly becomes clear that Elli is not just a child replacement for her creator. Both also share a bed togetherwhereby sexually explicit scenes are never shown, but are only hinted at (sometimes very clearly).

The theme of an abused android is complemented by the scary and unpredictable figure of Elli herself. As a result, it is never clear when violent outbreaks could threaten. The Trouble With Being Born touches on similar themes to Spielberg’s AI when it comes to human loss treated through a sci-fi approach.

Wollner’s sometimes extremely oppressive film also shows one human world from the outsider perspective of a non-human being. This is sometimes reminiscent of Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under the Skin and its sober, calm style makes it its very own beast of a film.
