Trump, who will soon start as US president, has said that he wants Greenland to be taken over by the US.
Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen said Wednesday to the incoming president of the United States For Donald Trumpthat Greenland can decide its own future.
Trump, who will return to the presidency next Monday, has recently been shaking things up with his speeches, according to which he would like the United States to take over the Danish island of Greenland. Trump has not ruled out the use of military force.
According to Frederiksen’s office, the prime minister had a telephone conversation with Trump. Frederiksen told Trump in a 45-minute phone call that Greenland can decide on its own independence. Frederiksen also referred to the Prime Minister of Greenland Mute Egeden to the statement that “Greenland is not for sale.”
Frederiksen told Danish media that the conversation was straightforward and long.
The prime minister also emphasized to Trump the strengthening of the security of the Arctic region and said that Denmark is “ready to take even more responsibility for it.”
Geographically, Greenland, which belongs to North America and has 56,000 inhabitants, is an autonomous region of Denmark that could become independent through a referendum. In addition to its strategic location, the United States is interested in Greenland’s large mineral reserves.
Already in his first presidential term, Trump expressed his interest in buying Greenland. At the time, Denmark and Greenland rejected the proposal.
