The joke that Denmark should buy California has gone viral. But behind is a seriousness.
“It is an attempt to meet Trump’s grotesque and absurd play about controlling Greenland,” Kenneth Haar, one of the people behind the campaign, told TT.
It all started with the advertiser Xavier Dutoit meeting two Americans at a bar in Indonesia a few weeks ago.
– They couldn’t see the problematic in Trump’s play. Xavier was provoked and made lightning fast a draft of a campaign and then began to contact about ten other people, several of whom are Danes, and that is how I came into the picture, says Kenneth Haar, who works as a researcher in Brussels.
The campaign, which proposes, among other things, that Denmark should introduce “Hygge in Hollywood”, has spread as a wildfire through the media world and already received 240,000 signatures.
– Denmark is flat and cold so California could contribute with tropical beaches and a more vibrant landscape. That is the idea we gather support. Of course, it’s a joke, but it’s not just a joke. By joke, we hope that people will understand the absurd in negotiating territory.
The goal is for the campaign to receive half a million signatures and reach President Donald Trump.
– Right now we hope that some journalist will ask him about this idea. Whatever he answers, I think it would show the absurd in it all.
