Frenchman Arthur Cazaux received a wildcard to the Grand Slam tournament and made quite a splash when he knocked out Holger Rune.
The victory numbers were written as 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
21-year-old Cazaux, who had never won a grand slam match before the tournament in Melbourne, impressed not least with his serves.
He accounted for a whopping 18 (!) serves against Holger Rune, ranked 114 places better.
– It was a crazy match. You hear it in my voice, says a happy but hoarse Cazaux in the victory interview after the match.
– No, but it was a hard fight. Holger is a fantastic player, I know him from before and knew it would be tough.
He also took the opportunity to thank the support from the stands, where a group of French supporters were heard shouting “Allez les bleus” throughout the match.
– The atmosphere was fantastic, thank you all for being here. I don’t know how you managed to keep the steam up the whole match, you guys are crazy. Thank you to all the French who are here. You have pushed me for every point from day one, says Arthur Cazaux.
He then broke down laughing when asked if he knows the supporters and replied:
– Uh, no.
