In the first half of 2022, significantly more rape sentences have been handed out in Denmark than in the entire years of 2018, 2019 and 2020, reports the newspaper Politiken.
In the first six months of 2022, there were 309 rape convictions, in the years 2018–2020 there were between 178 and 255 per year.
Denmark’s new Consent Act came into force on 1 January 2021.
All parties in the Folketing voted yes to the new law in December 2020. In Sweden, a consent law has been in force since July 2018.
Already at the end of 2021, Denmark could see that the number of rape reports had increased significantly that year. According to the police, the number of reports increased by approximately 41 percent compared to the previous three years.
On the other hand, it is difficult to draw any conclusions about the number of convictions from 2021. It may take several months before charges are brought and a verdict is reached. Therefore, some of the 2021 rape cases have been sentenced according to the old law.
