Daniel Ståhl wins the Bragdguldet 2023 – after an incomparable season and unforgettable WC success

There has been speculation since that gold-winning discus throw in the WC.
Now it is also clear – Daniel Ståhl will take home the Bragdguldet in 2023.

– I am incredibly proud, says Ståhl to Svenska Dagbladet.

Svenska Dagbladet’s gold medal, also known as the Bragdguldet, has been awarded since 1925. The award is given to “the best Swedish sporting feat of the year”, and can be given to both teams and individual athletes.

Duplantis & Kalla

In the first years, the winner was voted for by SvD’s readers, but the newspaper later switched to having a committee that selects the winner. Today sits, among other things Annette Norberg (curling), Mats Sundin (hockey) and Carolina Klüft (athletics). Lisa Ireniuseditor-in-chief and CEO at SvD, is chairman of the performance committee.

Previous winners of the Bragdguldet include, among others Björn Borg (tennis), Ingemar Stone ground (Alpine skiing), Jan-Ove Waldner (table tennis), Kajsa Bergqvist (athletics), Swedish women’s relay team 2014 (cross-country skiing – Charlotte Kalla, Anna The Hague, Emma Wikén and Ida Ingemarsdotter), and Armand Duplantis (pole vault). Last year won Nils van der Poel (skating) Achievement gold for his world record and efforts in the 2022 Olympics.

Ståhl’s feat

Ahead of this year’s award, many candidates have been discussed. The national table tennis team for its European Championship gold, Ebba Andersson for their WC gold, the shooting star Ludvig Åberg for the wins in the European Tour, the PGA Tour and the Ryder Cup, and the Beach Volleyball national team for the European Championship gold and the World Cup silver is an excerpt of those that have been balled up.
But most have enough Daniel Ståhls name mentioned in the context of Bragdguldet.

And it was also Ståhl who took it home. This after he took WC gold in the discus on the absolute last throw. The throw was 71.46 meters, which meant a championship record. The drama and the performance received an immediate stamp of achievement, which meant a small, but real, favoritism for Ståhl.
– It is extremely large, Bragdguldet was founded in 1925 and has been around for a long time. Now you are in the real league, so to speak. I am incredibly proud, says Ståhl in SvD’s broadcast.

Great joy

It was the favorite Kristjan Ceh who took the lead in his last throw in the WC, forcing Ståhl to complete his feat. Now he tells about that day.
– Before the first round I was quite nervous, then it got better and better with each round. Before the last throw, it was just a matter of trying to recharge as much as possible mentally. Be as big as possible in the movements, don’t give up, aim to press with big movements.
– I have experienced three times before that you get a little too eager and throw in the net or overstep. In the WC, I thought the opposite, and it ended up being a historic throw and it was incredibly cool, Ståhl told the daily.

Previous achievements for Ståhl include Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, WC gold in Doha 2019 and 13 SM gold.
