Damages and drives inflation

The Swedish krona is increasingly weaker against the outside world and every day we read new examples that proclaim the low Swedish krona. Since December 2022, the price for 1 euro has been higher than 11 Swedish kronor. The last time the krone was valued this low was in 2009. On Monday, one euro costs SEK 11.92. Therefore, voices are now also being raised that we should take a second look at introducing the European common currency, the euro, in Sweden as well.

In a debate article in The evening paper on Friday the Liberals trumpeted that “Sweden is being sold out – now we have to introduce the euro” and meant that it would strengthen Sweden’s influence, economy and also peace in Europe. Party leader Johan Pehrson believes that Sweden today suffers from not having a stable currency.

– This hurts Sweden and drives inflation, the Swedish people and the companies in Sweden deserve a strong currency, says the Liberals’ party leader Johan Pehrson in Efter fem.

After a clear position: has changed his mind on the issue

According to a survey conducted by the European Commission, 54 percent of Swedes are positive about introducing the euro as a new currency, and if there had been an election today, at least 30.6 percent would have voted for the introduction of the euro as a currency according to recent figures from the Central Statistics Office.

One who has changed his mind and now thinks that Sweden should join the collaboration is Lars Calmfors, professor emeritus in international economics. He was involved in the EMU investigation at the end of the 90s and then advised Sweden against joining a common European currency, then and there, but at the same time meant that Sweden would eventually join the cooperation.

– Sweden was not ready, we were still in crisis, says Lars Calmfors, but now believes that Sweden is ready.

The collaboration creates uncertainty

Former Prime Minister Leif Pagrotsky (S) has been critical of a common European currency from the very beginning and believes that it is problematic to have a common currency at the same time as there are 20 different governments and state budgets, something that creates uncertainty in cooperation .

– Every time it blows, the union has been hit by a crisis, says Leif Pagrotsky, and further believes that the union is wrongly constructed.
