Damaged ship with dangerous cargo on its way to Sweden

The ship is currently off the coast of Norway, but is said to be on its way past Denmark and Sweden on its way to Lithuania. Several county administrations and MSB follow the ship closely. In Kalmar County, among others, the coastal municipalities in the area are informed during meetings on Friday, according to P4 Kalmar.

The vessel MV Ruby was loaded in a Russian port on the Kola Peninsula and suffered hull damage. However, it is not welcome in the final destination in Lithuania, as the Danish media previously reported with reference to the Norwegian Maritime Administration.

Ordered to leave

When the ship anchored in Tromsö, Norwegian authorities established a protection zone of 500 meters. During an inspection, it was found that the damage needs to be repaired, but that it was not “desirable” that it should take place in densely populated Tromsö, reports Aftonbladet with reference to The Barents Observer. Then the MV Ruby was ordered to leave.

The vessel MV Ruby has 20,000 tons of ammonium nitrate on board. It is a dangerous chemical that, among other things, was behind the well-known mega-explosion in the port of Beirut in Lebanon in 2020 – but then in much smaller quantities.
