It’s been a little over three years since Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker hit theaters. The finale of the Sequel trilogy also marks the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, which was told in a total of nine episodes. One creative decision in particular has been tirelessly discussed since the cinema release: Rey’s origin.

The protagonist, played by Daisy Ridley, was introduced in Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens with a secret: who are her parents? Controversial Star Wars finale: Daisy Ridley shares her take on Rey’s origins in Episode 9

However, it was revealed in Episode 9 that this was a lie to manipulate Rey. In truth, she descends from one of the most influential Star Wars families ever: She’s a Palpatine. Many fans took the revelation as a retcon. Star Wars 9 overwrites Star Wars 8, so the accusation.

The controversial decision continues to cause debate. Now Ridley was asked by Rolling Stone for her assessment. Right at the beginning of her answer, she reveals where the idea of “Rey Nobody” originally comes.

[Star Wars 7 und 9-Regisseur] yy [Abrams] was the one who said that [Rey] is a nobody, so that’s where this idea came from not just from The Last Jediwhere it was transported as a message.

Where for many fans only one version or the other can exist, Ridley is all about it Rey’s independence as the heroine of the story. This independence is told in both Star Wars 8 and Star Wars 9.

at [Episode 9] I found it fascinating that you can be a hero in either case, whether you’re descended from no one or from literally the worst person in the universe. you are not your parentsyou are not your grandparents, you are not your bloodline and you are not the generations before you either.

Ridley emphasizes that she is an actress little influence on the scripts would have. But she herself is impressed by both developments.

Ultimately, however, that exceeds my pay grade. I say the words and get the job done. I love the ‘you can be whoever you want’ version, but I also love the version where you can correct mistakes, although you can’t change where you were born.

one Return to Star Wars doesn’t seem averse to Ridley. Her new film, Sometimes I Think About Dying, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend. Along the way, Ridley hinted that she would be quite willing to delve into the galaxy far, far away as Rey one more time.
