Dairy prices are falling – coffee and fruit are increasing

Food prices continue to fall somewhat overall. But in several product groups they are rising. The prices of fruit and coffee, tea and cocoa are increasing the most, according to Statistics Sweden’s Consumer Price Index for September.

“Prices rose the most for fruit, by 4 percent. Next comes coffee, tea and cocoa, whose prices increased by 3.1 percent,” says Caroline Neander, price statistician at Statistics Sweden, in a press release.

Milk, cheese and eggs

Among the product groups, prices fell the most for milk, cheese and eggs (-2.5 percent) and for oils and fats (-1.2).

The average prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages fell by 0.1 percent in September.

“The prices of non-alcoholic beverages tend to go up in September, while the prices of food tend to go down then. Looking at a slightly longer perspective, the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages have stabilized in 2023, and have not moved much since March,” says Caroline Neander.

Fruit and vegetables at the top and bottom

In terms of individual food products, fruit and vegetables are at the top as well as the bottom when it comes to price trends in September. The price of fresh berries rose by almost 31 percent in September, while the price of pears fell by almost 22 percent.

In total, the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages have risen by 7.7 percent since September 2022.
