The left party’s past can hinder it in the formation of a government, according to experts.
Nooshi Dadgostar admits that the old communist connections are problematic.
– We have done many things that are absolutely terrible and reprehensible, she says in P1’s party leader interview.
In P1’s party leader interview, V leader Nooshi Dadgostar was asked a question about her representatives’ connections to communist dictatorships in the old eastern states.
– It was not good. It was long before I stepped into this party and has nothing to do with the party I lead today, she answered.
However, Dadgostar does not rule out that the past can affect the image of the party.
– We were formed because we wanted people to have the right to vote, that those who worked would be able to organize themselves in the workplace. We come from the same place as the Social Democrats, and then for a period we did a lot of things of the type you mention which I think is absolutely terrible and reprehensible.
The Prime Minister: Not so good
At the same time, she is grappling with the controversy after the Almedal Week, where three V-tops posed with the flag of the terror-labeled organization PKK.
Something Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson (S) highlighted as a problem since Dadgostar demanded a place in the government.
– It’s funny that so many people want to sit in my government, but it’s a bit worrying that we saw members of parliament this summer who sat and waved flags from organizations branded as terrorists. It’s not so good for the ability to govern, Magdalena Andersson told Aftonbladet after the party leader debate.
C leader Annie Lööf has also protested against the flag waving.
– The left party has never been in government and there is a reason for that, she has previously said.
“A Desperate Struggle”
Political scientist Marja Lemne believes that S and C’s united front may be a planned move to keep Dadgostar’s party out of government formation.
– It is consistent. It is becoming a rather desperate fight for the broad center as it looks like the Left Party will be bigger than the Center Party. At least according to the latest surveys, she says and continues:
– The left party has done a cleanup and tried to distance itself from the past. I am sometimes surprised that Annie Lööf takes such a distance. One can ask when a party is considered ready to form a government.
However, Lemne does not believe that the Left Party will accept to be outside the formation of the government once more.
– It will probably be more difficult to exclude them in the same way this time. And the Left Party risks quite a lot if it lies flat and does not gain any influence. They will be clear that they want a deal and not settle for loose promises.
