Da Silva sworn in as Brazil’s new president

Veteran Lula da Silva is once again Brazil’s president, less than five years after he was convicted in a corruption scandal. It will be the 77-year-old’s third term in office. Outgoing president Jair Bolsonaro was absent from the ceremony.

The president of Brazil is – once again – Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. At 3pm on New Year’s Day, local time, he pledged to “uphold, defend and obey the constitution”.
