The 21-year-old Pieterse took the lead in the race shortly after the start. “It was a big mud puddle, it is always quite slippery and difficult here,” she says afterwards. In the last lap she made a mistake, allowing competitor Carmen Alvarado to get into the wheel. “But I knew the last part of the lap would be in my favor again.” This allowed her to stay ahead.
