The sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse between Chur and Oberwil-Lieli has been “neutralized” after the death of Swiss rider Gino Mäder, victim of a serious fall at the end of the stage the day before, the organization announced on Friday June 16. “The peloton will start the last 30 kilometers; the race will be neutralized today, and all the runners will form a procession in homage” to the 26-year-old runner from the Bahrain-Victorious team “to the finish city”, according to the official live of the event. Gino Mäder was in 27th place in the general classification when he fell Thursday 14 km from the finish, in the descent of the Albula pass. Found inert in a ravine below, he was resuscitated and then transported to Chur hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday. The fatal fall of Gino Mäder recalls those of the Belgian Wouter Weylandt in 2011, in the descent of the Passo del Bocco, 25 km from the finish of the 3rd stage of the Giro, and of the Italian Fabio Casartelli in 1995, in the descent du Portet d’Aspet during the 15th stage of the Tour de France.
