Cycling: Dramatic decider in the men’s line race at the Olympics – Remco Evenpoel won despite a puncture at the end

A week ago, Belgium’s Remco Evenpoel took home the men’s time trial in the Olympic cycle.
Today he also won the line race, thus becoming the first ever in history to win both disciplines in the same Olympics.

But it was not without drama. Evenpoel, who grabbed the lead with 15 kilometers to go, had a puncture with 3.6 of the 273 kilometer (longest ever in the Olympics) long race.

  • Had great leadership

Evenpoel screamed and waved in panic to get a new bike, and already got it after about ten seconds.

Evenpoel had over a minute’s lead when the puncture occurred, and the short stop didn’t seem to bother him much.

    Double French on the podium

He maintained a clear lead all the way to the finish, eventually winning by 1.11 ahead of Frenchman Valentin Madouas. The bronze medal also went to a Frenchman: Christophe Laporte.

Before the Olympics, Evenpoel’s greatest achievement was the overall victory in the Spanish Vuelta two years ago.
