The Olympic cycling events will take place from July 27 to August 3. Discover the full calendar.
Cycling is one of the five sports present in the Summer Olympic Games since the first edition in 1896, along with athletics, swimming, gymnastics and fencing. Already in 1896 there were track and road events. For this 2024 edition of the Games in Paris, there will be six track events and two road events. To these eight traditional cycling events we can add BMX (freestyle and racing) as well as mountain biking.
In all categories, the French have a good chance of medals. On the track first, the French team can hope for good results, in the wake of Mathilde Gros, world speed champion in 2022, and the men’s speed team. On the road, if the French are not necessarily among the favorites, fifth place in the world ranking last year gives them a quota of four riders to field, which could allow them to surprise with a collective tactic. Finally, the French mountain bike team can dream big, with a women’s team led by Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and Loana Lecomte, respectively reigning world champion and vice-world champion. For the men, we will have to count on Victor Koretzky and Jordan Sarrou, while certain runners usually on the road like Mathieu van der Poel and Tom Pidcock will try to play the leading roles.
When are the Olympic cycling events held?
Road cycling will take place on Saturday July 27 for the men’s and women’s time trials, and July 3 and 4 for the road events. The track riders will compete on their own between Monday August 5 and Sunday August 11. For mountain biking, women will race on Sunday July 28, and men on Monday July 29. Finally, BMX will take place from Tuesday July 30 to Friday August 2.
Where will the cycling events take place?
The course of 273 kilometers for men and 158 kilometers for women of the road cycling event will start and arrive at the Trocadéro. For the time trial, the 32.4 kilometer course, identical for men and women, will start from Les Invalides and arrive at the Alexandre III bridge. All track cycling events will be at the national velodrome of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, as will BMX racing. Finally, the mountain bike course will climb the Elancourt hill while the freestyle BMX will take over the Place de la Concorde.
