Belgian Remco Evenepoel won the first stage of the Tour of Italy by setting an impressive time during the 19.6 km individual time trial, this Saturday May 6 in Ortona. The Soudal-Quick Step runner beat Italian Filippo Ganna and Portuguese João Almeida by 22 and 29 seconds respectively. The other big favorite of the Giro, Slovenian Primož Roglič, is already 43 seconds behind the Belgian rider. With this first victory, Evenepoel endorses the pink jersey of leader of the Tour of Italy for the first time in his career, he who had abandoned during his first participation in the Giro in 2021. It is also the 42nd victory among professionals for the Belgian, recent winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and 10th in an individual time trial.
