Customers rush to the pharmacies here is the product

The new year is just around the corner and ahead of the New Year celebrations, pharmacies have noticed an influx of customers looking for a specific product. These are sedatives for dogs who are afraid of the rockets on New Year’s Eve.

What customers want

SVT News reports that Apotek Hjärtat has seen a tenfold increase in purchases of the drug in the weeks before the New Year.

News24 have been in contact with Elin Jarlcommunications manager at Apoteket, who tells us that sales have increased by a staggering 90 percent compared to September this year.

“The prescription drugs that calm pets increase significantly during November and December. We see a similar increase every year when pet owners prepare for the New Year’s holiday,” she writes in an email to Nyheter24.

How effective are the over-the-counter medications?

“Our recommendation is to consult your veterinarian to get the right help for your animal. Never buy anything online of unknown origin,” she writes in the email.

You can do that if your dog gets scared on New Year’s

Nyheter24 has previously reported on how you can calm your dog on New Year’s and there are a few different tricks. Here are some of them:

  • Use a bodywrap or thundershirt on your dog. It is a garment that fits tightly and provides a mild pressure over the torso that can have a calming effect.
  • Use an adaptil collar for a calming effect. It can be bought at pharmacies.
  • Play music or the radio during New Year’s Eve and cover the windows.
  • Make sure the dog is in a place or room where it feels safe.
  • Do not leave the dog alone.
