Lucas Hernandez will not be able to participate in the Champions League semi-final return between PSG and Borussia Dortmund, or even in a possible final. He will also be deprived ofEuro 2024 with the French team this summer. The defender, who collapsed during the Parisians’ defeat on German soil last night (1-0) for the first leg, while trying to block a shot from Niclas Füllkrug, suffers from a serious injury to his left knee, according to his doctors.
This Thursday, shortly after 5 p.m., the results of an MRI carried out in Paris spoke and confirmed the fears: a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee. PSG immediately announced that Lucas Hernandez would not be able to finish the season, neither with Paris nor with the Blues.
This is not the first time that Lucas Hernandez has faced torn ligaments. In the opening match of the 2022 World Cup, against Australia, he suffered the same injury, but this time on the other knee, the right. An injury which deprived him of the entire competition and kept him away from the pitch until August-September 2023. Enough to raise questions about this physical fragility of the defender.
What return date for Lucas Hernandez?
Lucas Hernandez will have to undergo surgery in the coming days. The healing process that will follow will, as we know, be long and arduous, with rehabilitation after such an operation generally lasting six to nine months, to be able to return to form on the pitch.
In his absence, the French team will once again have to find a solution, which could still result in the tenure of his brother Théo on the left side. Didier Deschamps has already expressed his disappointment and concern over this significant loss. He will convene his list on May 16 for a gathering in Clairefontaine from May 29, with a view to the European Championship in Germany (from June 14 to July 14).
Until then, PSG will also have to end the Ligue 1 season on May 19 and perhaps play a C1 final on June 1, in London, without their defender. Not counting the Coupe de France final against Lyon on May 25.
