After weeks of investigation, in which several people in the sect have been found dead, the police dug up more victims in graves in a forest in the eastern part of the country.
The graves were found after an arrest of a cult leader who allegedly urged his followers to starve themselves to death.
“We haven’t even scratched the surface, and that’s a clear indication that you can count on us finding more bodies,” says one of the police officers, who wishes to remain anonymous.
At least three of the dead must be children.
Cult leader Makenzie Nthenge voluntarily surrendered to police in March but was released. He was arrested last week when four of his followers were found dead after starving themselves.
“This pastor will be brought to justice, even though he himself has started a hunger strike,” says a police source.
In addition to those found dead, eleven people have been taken to hospital, three of them with life-threatening injuries. The eleven were rescued in connection with the arrest of Nthenge and six aides.
