Cult director reveals exciting details about forgotten Game of Thrones spin-off – but it’s been on hold for 7 years

Cult director reveals exciting details about forgotten Game of Thrones

In addition to House of the Dragon, sooner or later there will be another spin-off series from the fantasy world of Game of Thrones. Since the spin-off about the sulking know-nothing Jon Snow is now dead, the other ideas that were being considered suddenly have a better chance again.

Director Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential, Knight of Passion) spoke to Inverse about his approach, which he said was beautifully crafted and is only unordered because it’s HBO too far removed from the narrative pillars of the original series be. He compares it as a mix of Ray Harryhausen’s Sinbad’s Seventh Voyage and Homer’s Odyssey, but to us it sounds more like a mix of Battlestar Galactica and Waterworld.

The next Game of Thrones spin-off: fantasy cruise with a queen on the high seas?

The project has the working title Ten Thousand Ships and is said to revolve around Queen Nymeria, who came from Essos to Dorne to flee the Dragon Lords of Valyria several thousand years before the events of Game of Thrones. Helgeland explains:

Essentially it was the story of Moses being exchanged for Nymeria. Their land is destroyed and their people are forced to live on the water, which is why the series is called Ten Thousand Ships. They must flee and find a new home, like the Israelites did when they left Egypt. She leads her people, trying to keep everyone together, but everything constantly threatens to fall apart as they travel a fictionalized version of the Mediterranean looking for a new home.

The project’s potential showrunner has already met with original author George RR Martin, who gave the project his blessing. All that’s missing is the decisive blessing from the broadcaster HBO, why Helgeland “Nothing is ever truly dead” meant – although of course “What is dead can never die” should be called.

Spin-off series with the working titles Sea Snake and Flea Bottom were also planned, which would revolve around the adventures of Corlys Velaryon and the home of Ser Davos, respectively. An animated series called The Golden Empire, about the Chinese-inspired country of Yi Ti, has been in development for HBO streamer Max since 2021.

When does House of the Dragon continue?

Luckily, if you need a fantasy fix with dragons and palace intrigue again soon, you won’t have to wait much longer. The second season of House of the Dragon is already on June 16, 2024 on HBO and Sky Germany.
