Cult director lets the moon crash into the earth with

When gigantic tidal waves roll through big cities, the moon crashes into the earth and huge cracks open up in the ground, we can actually only be dealing with a film by Roland Emmerich. His last film of this kind called Moonfall is on TV for the first time this evening.

Free TV premiere: That’s what Moonfall is about

The name says it all: In Moonfall the moon threatens to fall to earth. The satellite of our home planet has deviated from its orbit due to a mysterious event and is now moving inexorably towards Earth. Which of course has an extremely unpleasant effect on life down here.

In order to perhaps save the earth and the moon after all, a motley crew sets out. It consists of ex-astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry), astronaut Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and conspiracy expert KC Houseman (John Bradley). However, the surprising discovery awaits them, what the lunar catastrophe is really all about.

The moon did not go astray by itself or through a natural event.

Roland Emmerich invested over 150 million in this orgy of destruction

The absolute cult director and undisputed grand master of disaster films pulls out all the stops again with Moonfall. At times the film seems like a best-of of his greatest destructions. We see images that are reminiscent of 2012 or The Day After Tomorrow, but also very much of Independence Day. That means: Some landmarks are breaking here again.

Such a spectacle is of course especially good on the big screen, but Moonfall wasn’t particularly successful there. It was filmed during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and is in 2022 pretty much flopped in the cinema. According to The Numbers, the production cost around $150 million, but the film only grossed just over $59 million worldwide. Box Office Mojo is talking about a total of 67 million.
