The island nation of Cuba was hit by a power outage covering the entire island on Friday, according to the country’s Ministry of Energy.
According to the ministry, the widespread power outage was caused by a fault in the power plant located in the city of Matanzas, which caused the power grid to collapse.
On Thursday, the Prime Minister of Cuba Manuel Marrero announced that there is an “energy emergency” on the island. Electricity supply difficulties have caused power outages of up to 20 hours in some provinces.
On Thursday, the Cuban government also suspended all non-essential public sector operations in order to provide enough electricity for households.
