Cuba will hold a referendum on September 25 on a new family law, the country’s parliament announced on Friday. The bill contains the legalization of both same-sex marriage and surrogacy.
Parliament says in a statement that “the people get the last word” but that the Cuban people will eventually learn to stand behind the “revolutionary, inclusive and democratic” proposal.
The new law will replace 47-year-old legislation.
LGBTQ activists attempted to legalize same-sex marriage when the Cuban constitution was reformed in 2019. But it was stopped due to stiff opposition from some churches and conservative groups.
