On Tuesday, April 25, the shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive got a new set of skins. The Anubis Collection, which is based on the Anubis map, is only available from a special loot box. According to one analyst, this should have brought in at least 11 million dollars on the first day.
What are these skins anyway? The Anubis Collection consists of 19 weapon skins named after Egyptian gods such as Horus or Ramses. They are only available from a special pack for real money. A package costs 2 dollars (1.89 euros). However, the chances of the new skins are very low.
Where does the 11 million dollars come from? The streamer and YouTuber Heyzeus analyzed the new skins and sent a tweet about it. From a database on CS:GO, he took the number of “Eye of Horus” skins received up to that point and compared them with the probability of receiving such a skin.
From this he concluded that statistically at least 5.5 million boxes had to be opened on the first day. So he came to at least 11 million dollars in sales.
The revenue generated by Valve from the skins being traded online between players was also not included. Because with every transaction, the developer gets a part of the invested money.
The new skin series is apparently a great success for CS:GO, which is currently in a small wave of hype anyway. In March, more skins were traded than ever before, and we are talking about more than 100 million euros that the players have invested.
Counter-Strike 2 is causing a lot of hype in CS:GO
Why is CS:GO so busy right now? Over the past few weeks, we’ve repeatedly reported incredible amounts of money related to the skins in Counter-Strike. A Danish collector, for example, claims to have earned $500,000 with 2 items.
One reason for this might be the great interest in the game itself. Because that gets a big update in the summer, which should then turn the shooter into Counter-Strike 2. Not only the engine will be renewed, but also the maps, the sound effects and the graphics in general will be improved.
All information about Counter-Strike 2 can be found in this overview or in the video embedded here:
But not only with the skins there is a lot of movement. On March 16, 2023, CS:GO set a new player record with 1,519,457 people online at the same time (via SteamDB). Yesterday, April 28th, more than 1.35 million players logged in at the same time. That alone would have been a record prior to March 2013.
But just because the shooter is experiencing a little hype doesn’t mean every player has to be good at it. This was recently proven by two of the largest German streamers:
