Crous meal: no wonder “students are dying”

Crous meal no wonder students are dying

Since the start of the school year, on social networks, the food insecurity of Crous students in Rennes Bretagne has been singled out. In university restaurants, the quality and especially the quantity of meals are controversial. Explanations, pictures.

A sandwich chicken with just a few lettuce leaves, sauerkraut served without cabbage with three pieces of meat and a simple potato, a slice of miniature pie… These meals are served not to children but to students in restaurants Crous academics. Since the start of the school year, on social networks, images have been shared to denounce the ridiculous portions that are given to students from the Crous de Rennes Bretagne. On Twitter, on October 28, the Rennes 2 student union “Union Pirate” posted a message in which it explained, with supporting photos, that in “University restaurants and cafes, the portions have been drastically reduced. Rennes, they even cut the little pies in half before putting them on the plates.” The Rennes Bretagne Crous has also removed most sandwiches and desserts from its displays, and has increased the price of certain products such as Pasta boxes, sold much more expensive than in supermarkets. The union also ensures that “points of sale deemed ‘not profitable enough'” were closed by the organization, thus leaving many students sometimes without a solution to eat at lunchtime.

“What a shame! The students are breaking the slab”

Faced with this alarming situation, the deputy Nupes of Val-de-Marne Louis Boyard, also took the floor being indignant. “What a shame! So these are the reduced-price meals praised by Emmanuel Macron? Bread and three times nothing? And afterwards, we are surprised that the students are dying!”he commented on his Twitter account following a photo of a sandwich sold by the Crous de Bretagne.

What are the causes ?

This situation in university restaurants is not new. In recent months, inflation has had a major impact on meal production costs, “to reach almost 8€ per meal”indicated the Crous of Rennes Bretagne in its press release of September 16, 2022. It also underlined that in such a context, and in order to fight against the food wasteof the provisions had been taken. Among them, work has been done on “recipes” for “serve the recommended quantities, with a regulatory weight, defined in a precise reference system (GEM-RCN) in order to be adapted to the caloric expenditure of a young adult.” However, they heard that some portions were not satisfying enough, so they undertook to review them but above all that they would no longer be served. “until they are revised”.

For the president of Unef, Imane Ouelhadj, guest of RMC this Thursday, November 3, the situation is also due to the inaction of the government. “The CROUS are in somewhat complicated situations with falling or stagnating budgets and rising students. Faced with this, the government does not take its responsibilities”, she said. On the executive side, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne is traveling in the Marne, to return “on the government’s objectives in the fight against food insecurity”as stated in a press release.
