Inhabited for two millennia, Budapest was officially created on November 17, 1873 from the union of the cities of Buda, Pest and Obuda. At the origin of this union, the famous Chain Bridge inaugurated in 1849 was the first “fixed” bridge connecting the two banks of the Danube. Just renovated for the city’s 150th anniversary, it is now reserved for pedestrians! The famous stone lions continue to stand guard at each end of the bridge.
