It is almost two years since Therese Johaug last ran a race. Now it’s almost time again, in the 17 kilometer long race “Engadin Frauenlauf” in Switzerland on March 1.
– When I have a start number on my chest, then I want to go fast. I have to admit that, says Johaug.
“Legs far behind”
On May 1, the 35-year-old also makes a comeback in running when she runs the “Grue half-marathon”. There, too, she hopes it will go away and is aiming for a time that only four Norwegians have previously run under.
– The goal is to run at around 1.10, she says.
The time would also be enough to qualify for this summer’s athletics EC, where the qualifying time is set for 1.10.30.
Johaug, who has won 14 WC gold medals, has been training systematically since she retired and in January there were 60 hours of training. In recent weeks, she has completed tests to see where she stands physically.
– The answer is that I am far behind where I have been. But based on the amount of training and how the last year has been, I’m satisfied.
Two things that decide
Johaug has previously opened up about trying to reach the WC in Trondheim in 2025 and tells NRK that there are two things that determine whether she will bet or not. The first is in what physical shape she can get back to, and the second is whether she will be able to cope with being away from her daughter Kristin, who was born on May 17 last year.
– It means a lot to see what the shape is like, and whether it is really possible or not. And maybe mostly feel the conscience at home and what it’s like.
