Cross-country skiing: Johaug shoots down Northug’s WC chances

Petter Northug was somewhat sensationally second in the 20 kilometer classic in the Norwegian Cup last Sunday.

Afterwards, Eirik Myhr Nossum was impressed to say the least.

– He is clearly relevant for both the five-mile in the World Cup in Holmenkollen in March but also the WC in Trondheim next year, Nossum said to VG.

Northug himself said that there is a “small possibility”.

If you ask another Norwegian ski icon, that possibility is very slim.

– I simply believe that the competition is so great at the top level. You have to go to quite a few World Cup competitions to qualify and to be selected for the Norwegian team, says Therese Johaug to NRK and continues:

– Then Petter (Northug) really has to put in the last push.

When asked directly if she thinks Petter Northug will go to the WC in Trondheim next year, she answers:

– I wish I could say yes, but I don’t think so.

Petter Northug ended his elite career in traditional cross-country skiing in 2018.
