PlayStation 5’s latest update blocks the controversial Cronus Zen device. This move supports fair play against accessories that provide unfair advantage.
PlayStation 5‘s latest firmware update allows users to customize macros and controllers on their gaming consoles. Cronus Zen caused the device to be blocked. This restricts the use of Zen, which is claimed to provide an unfair advantage, especially in competitive multiplayer games. Call of Duty is among the platforms where Zen is most widely used, and its website states that more than 500,000 users use this device.
Use of Cronus Zen and Anti-Cheat Technologies
Cronus Zen allows users to take advantage of features like aim assist and recoil reduction with a mouse and keyboard, creating a conflict with anti-cheat technologies from companies like Activision. By 2023, Activision’s anti-cheat Ricochet technology could allegedly detect the use of such third-party hardware and ban repeat offenders.
Cronus’ Reaction to PS5 Update
After the PS5 firmware update 24.01-08.60.00 was released, Cronus made a statement advising its users not to update their consoles while a fix was developed. In Cronus’ statement, it was stated that the updates made to PS5 since January 24 prevented Zen from working by disconnecting it.
While Cronus Zen isn’t explicitly mentioned in Sony’s update patch notes, the product appears to be targeted by the firmware. The gaming community welcomed this move. Additionally, Xbox and other major gaming companies and developers have followed similar policies and taken steps against unauthorized use of controllers and accessories.
