The unrest arose when hundreds of Hajduk Split fans were on their way home after the 1-3 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the final league round. The buses in which the supporters were traveling must have stopped on the motorway and shortly afterwards a confrontation arose with the police.

According to Croatian police, Hajduk Split supporters blocked the highway and refused to move. The police must then have fired shots to gain control of the situation. Two supporters must have been hit by the shots, but no one should have received life-threatening injuries. Nor should any police officer have received life-threatening injuries in the riot.

Dinamo Zagreb had already secured the league victory ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Hajduk Split.
