Croatia goes against the grain – happy for tourists: “Croats do not demonstrate”

Croatia is becoming more and more popular as a holiday destination. In Sweden, the country is in seventh place on the list of the most searched destinations for the summer, according to statistics from the travel site Momondo.

Wants to be the most sustainable in Europe

With Tourism Minister Nikolina Brnjac at the helm, Croatia is investing in becoming the most sustainable travel destination in Europe. Earlier this year, the country’s first tourism law came into force.

– We wanted to find a way to strengthen resilience, implement sustainable practices and move away from the idea that success is solely based on the number of overnight stays and income from tourism – we want to find the right balance between the economic, the environmental and the social, says Nikolina Brnjac to Euronews.

The law will help decentralize the tourism industry and adapt it to local and regional needs. Among other things, local communities will receive tools to both improve the quality of life for the local population and to mitigate tourism’s negative impact on the environment.

Recently, the United Nations tourism agency UNWTO also announced that it plans to establish a center for sustainable tourism in Croatia. In cooperation with the University of Zagreb, experts will research, develop and promote sustainable tourism policies.
