On Wednesday, the Riksdag voted through the controversial amendments to the law on foreign espionage. The Riksdag adopted the amendments to the law with 270 yes votes against 37 no votes. Only the Left Party and the Green Party voted against. Critics have warned that they threaten freedom of speech and the press. The changes to the law mean that the crimes of foreign espionage, aggravated foreign espionage and disclosure of secret information in international cooperation are introduced into the criminal code. The same offense is introduced in the press and freedom of expression legislation. Both freedom of communication and freedom of acquisition are limited in this regard. This means that under certain circumstances it becomes a criminal offense to disclose secret information that occurs within Sweden’s international collaborations and that may damage Sweden’s relationship with another state or an international organization without authorization. Espionage is not only if you damage the security of the kingdom, but also the relations with other states. Follow the live broadcast in the player above
