Denmark tightens border control towards Sweden.
Now the organization Resenärnerna rages and believes that it could lead to chaos for the Öresund trains – and up to 15,000 people every day.
– It is a rather populist measure, says Speaker Jonas Friberg.
The Danish Minister of Justice, Peter Hummelgaard, announced today that the control at the border with Sweden will be tightened. This after the recent wave of violence where Swedes are suspected of violent crimes in Denmark.
The decision means that the police will, among other things, strengthen their physical controls at the Öresund trains.
Jonas Friberg, chairman of the Travellers’ organisation, states that they are concerned about the consequences this could lead to.
– In concrete terms, it’s almost as if Stockholm were to set up a border control in Karlaplan. Most people have an image that there are a couple of trains a day over the Öresund Bridge, but there are about as many trains as subway trains at Karlaplan, he says.
According to Friberg, the decision on the tighter controls could lead to train delays affecting between 10,000 and 15,000 travelers every day.
“It’s years of waiting times”
– We are talking about tens of thousands of people who work and live on different sides of the Öresund Bridge. It’s an integration that you have to respect when legislating between these two countries, but they don’t seem to think it’s that important for some reason.
– It’s not a small thing. It may mean tens of minutes and it may not sound like much, but it does for up to 15,000 people per day. There are years of waiting.
The Travelers chairman thinks about the chaos in connection with the border controls during the corona pandemic and the migration wave in 2015.
– I understand that there is a problem, but the problem does not disappear because you cross a bridge over a national border. These two governments may be able to find other ways to cooperate and prevent gang criminals, says Jonas Friberg.
– Here we have a problem with traveling gang criminals. It feels like another populist decision where they want to show action and allow people who have to travel to their job, family or holiday home to pay the price. They are the ones who will pay for it.
