In the early 2000s, Richard Kelly was one of the hottest young directors in Hollywood. He made an impressive debut with the somber Donnie Darko, and he did it two decades later effortlessly stands the test of time. Ultimately, however, Kelly never became the great directing star that many saw in him.
All doors were open to Kelly after Donnie Darko. He made a bitter crash landing with his second film, the extremely ambitious Southland Tales. Even if the sci-fi adventure has found many defending voices in the meantime, it was an unparalleled box office disaster. His third film, The Box – Du bist the Experiment, was hardly mentioned after that – wrongly so!
Sci-fi thriller on Amazon Prime: The Box by Richard Kelly
The story of The Box takes us back to the 1970s and introduces us to NASA technician Arthur Lewis (James Marsden) who plagued by money worries becomes. He would like to give his wife Norma (Cameron Diaz) and son Walter (Sam Stone) a better life, but the situation is complicated.

The Box – Trailer (German)
One day a strange Box with a red button delivered to Arthur’s doorstep. Shortly thereafter, a sinister man named Arlington Steward (Frank Langella) rings and explains how it works: If Arthur and Norma press the button within the next 24 hours, they will receive one million US dollars in cash.
As is so often the case, there is a catch: as soon as the button is pressed, a person dies. Who? Where? As? And when? That is unclear. The only certainty Arthur and Norma have is that they don’t know the person. As the clock ticks, a nerve-wracking moral dilemma is unfolding before our eyes.
The Box is a sci-fi thriller like a Twilight Zone episode
Kelly exploits the premise to the fullest, prompting us as viewers to take a stand on the events. The central conflict takes on another level with every passing minute, until at some point we are completely in the Labyrinth of secrets have lost, which is best embodied by Langella’s character.
In addition, the film inspires with its cold, unsettling atmosphere: In dem great 1970s setting something ominous unfolds. It cannot be grasped, but is present in every picture. The paranoia of that decade awakens as a mystery that fascinates as much as it frightens.
