The creators of Payday have announced a new co-op shooter and gave us some details about their new heist game.
What kind of game is this? The game is titled “Den of Wolves” and is a co-op shooter developed by 10 Chambers. 10 Chambers is the development studio behind the co-op shooter GTFO and was founded in 2015 by Ulf Andersson. He is considered the creator and brain behind the Payday franchise.
Den of Wolves is set in the year 2097, in a futuristic future where research and technology are highly advanced. The setting is the city of Midtown, where rich corporations in particular have power and use the city as their arena. Simon Viklund, Narrative Director at 10 Chambers, described Midtown to us as “Manhatten on crack.”
Players take on the role of a heist crew working both for and against various companies. Contracts can take various forms, such as industrial espionage, kidnapping and sabotage. For example, it may happen that you receive an order from a large corporation in order to harm its competitors.
The developers also gave us some comparisons to describe Den of Wolves. For example, it’s a mix of Payday and Black Mirror, but also a baby of Heat, Inception and Blade Runner.
Live service with early access on Steam
What do we know about the release? Den of Wolves is set to be released in Early Access on Steam, but the developers haven’t been able to give us a release window yet.
A console release is also planned, but the PC release takes priority.
On top of that, Den of Wolves will be a live service game and will receive DLC over time, which will then expand the game world of the shooter.
Each raid tells its own storyline
What characterizes the gameplay of the game? Den of Wolves is played in 4-player co-op. The difficulty level should be somewhere between GTFO (Hardcore) and Payday (Arcade). Even though Den of Wolves is intended to be easier than GTFO, it is still based on a similar concept in terms of gameplay: players should lose control of a situation and then take it back.
There is also something like a backstory that tells how the city became what it is in 2097. There is no coherent campaign. Instead, there are different storylines that tell their own stories.
A storyline consists of different missions. For example, we as players could be given the task of breaking into the office of a certain company, stealing data and bringing it to a competing company.
However, this break-in is not the first mission in the storyline. Before that, you might have to break into another building to get a building plan or something similar. The storyline is then concluded with the actual break-in and therefore consists of various missions that serve to carry out the actual break-in – which is also part of the storyline.
What plans are there for the financing model? 10 Chambers plans to offer microtransactions for Den of Wolves, but they should be “tasteful”.
According to Simon Viklund, there will be no P2W or gambling mechanics or anything similar. Above all, cosmetic items are planned.
