Colin Cantwell, creator of Death Star, has died at the age of 90. Cantwell also collaborated with NASA, which published the first moon landing in 1969.
Colin Cantwell, creator of Death Star, has passed away. Cantwell’s wife, Sierra Dall, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Colin Cantwell died at her Colorado home last Saturday. Cantwell, who died at the age of 90, was born in 1932 and graduated from the University of California’s animation department. Cantwell had also attended the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

Colin Cantwell’s interest in space and architecture first gave him the opportunity to work with the legendary director Stanley Kubrick (in 2001: A Space Odyssey), and then in 1974 he met George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars universe. Cantwell brought countless iconic spaceships to the Star Wars universe.
Among the spaceships designed by Cantwell, there are X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Star Destroyer ships. But the legendary designer’s most iconic work was undoubtedly the Imperial Death Star ship. Colin Cantwell also worked for NASA as part of the historic Moon landing project in 1969.
The Star Wars universe is preparing for a new movie directed by Kevin Fiege, Fiege will work with Michael Waldron, the writer of the last Doctor Strange movie.
