Creator and showrunner at odds over the future of the

All 10 episodes of the first season of House of the Dragon have been aired. The response was mostly positive, and the success was resounding anyway. But the really difficult part is only just beginning: How does it look after the successful introduction of the grand plan for the fantasy epic out? How long will we accompany Rhaenyra, Alicent and Daemon in their power struggle for Westeros?

The series’ two main minds, showrunner Ryan Condal and creator George RR Martin, have spoken out in the past few weeks — albeit in opposite ways.

George RR Martin demands 4 seasons of House of the Dragon

Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin also wrote the book for House of the Dragon – a kind of fictional history book that traces the development of the Targaryens and the Civil War “Dance of the Dragons”. He serves as series creator and executive producer on the series. (Read the Targaryen family tree here)

In October, Martin “announced” on his blog the Total running time for House of the Dragon: 40 episodes.

There are 4 seasons with 10 episodes each necessary to do the Dance of the Dragons justice from start to finish.

George RR Martin does have a lot of influence in the franchise. Officially, however, the series runtime is far from over. We can rather than strong recommendation read. In the text, Martin writes how satisfied he is with the implementation so far, but he would have liked a deeper, more detailed depiction of one or the other character. As the author of the original, Martin naturally has an ideal in mind: it’s better to have a little more than less.

This protective attitude he used to adapt Game of Thrones – unsuccessfully. Martin demanded 12 seasons, the showrunners Benioff and Weiss filmed his song of ice and fire in 8 seasons. In this context, his statement appears to be a preventive measure. But is it necessary?

The showrunner’s House of the Dragon plans

Great finale! House of The Dragon Episode 10 Recap

Last week, The Hollywood Reporter confronted House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal about George RR Martin’s 4-season plan. Not wanting to commit just yet, Condal evaded a clear answer:

I am very focused on the 10 episodes that are in front of me at this moment. There is definitely more to talk about after Season 2.

Condal thinks step by step, or season by season. This not only distinguishes him from Martin, but also from the Rings of Power colleagues, who will stretch their Middle-earth story over 5 seasons. No more, no less.

what is better now A clear plan or an open concept?

150 years of Game of Thrones history: House of the Dragon should only be the beginning

Ryan Condal’s answer goes even further, and it offers an exciting, broader perspective on the world of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones that George RR Martin should also enjoy – even if it runs counter to his 4-season plan.

This is the story of a Taragaryen dynasty which continues 150 years after the season 1 finale. King and queens come and go […]. So the question is not so much where the story ends as where the curtain of the series falls. Because the story is made by Geore [R.R. Martin] continued to write while we film. It’s not like the A Song of Ice and Fire books where the ending [auch] is the end of the story. Therefore is “I don’t know yet” is the honest answer. But we will take the time we need to tell this story. […]

Expressed differently: Ryan Condal only sees House of Dragon as part of a potential 150-year prequel that could eventually fully close the bridge to Bran Stark’s defenestration in Game of Thrones Episode 1.

Yes, maybe the Dance of the Dragons segment so dear to George RR Martin is really coming to an end after 3 seasons. The series took a lot of liberties in the first 10 episodes, changed, shortened and tightened the template, which as a “historical document” is anyway more dependent on the imagination of the series authors than GoT was back then. However, after the dance of the dragons, a new House of the Dragon section could begin. One of many. What role is that? a total of 6 other Game of Thrones spin-offs will play is not clear at all.

House of the Dragon breaks free from George RR Martin and that’s a good thing, the Creator himself will admit that. And if the series continues to be so successful, it might even get its 12 seasons this time. The possibilities are endless and the authors keep them open.
