Mona Lisa and the Blood feels like one long weird dream on Amazon Prime
In the plot of Amirpour’s third feature film, the main character Mona Lisa Lee (Jeon Jong-seo), who is being held in a mental institution, possesses supernatural powers. One day she breaks out of there and drifts through New Orleans at night.
Here she befriends, among others, the tough stripper Bonnie (Kate Hudson) and her 10-year-old son Charlie (Evan Whitten), meets the bizarre drug dealer Fuzz (Ed Skrein) and is hunted by the police officer Harold (Craig Robinson).
Especially the first half seems as if this film were a never-ending night odyssey. For her work became the director inspired by fantasy flicks of her youth from the 80’s and 90’s and that’s exactly what Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon feels like.
Similar to A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night and The Bad Batch, Amirpour again relies on strong, hypnotic images and a Soundtrack that alternates techno beats with metal sounds. The film unfolds as a wild mix of genres, in which you can never predict which direction the story will take next.
Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon is best enjoyed as a dream-like trip that takes you on a journey through the night.
