Coyote spotted in neighborhood near Sarnia park

Sarnia police say a coyote was spotted in a neighborhood east of Canatara Park.

City police said officers received a report of the coyote walking during the day in the residential neighborhood.

“We would like to remind the public that, even though coyotes are normally not as active during the day, they are still out and about,” spokesperson Const. Giovanni Sottosanti said in a news release.

Anyone seeing a coyote should “just stay away,” he said.

“They are not known to approach humans but are rather very timid and tend to run away.”

Sottosanti said residents should also avoid leaving out garbage that may attract coyotes, and take precautions when small pets are let outside.

“This notice is just to remind people regarding their surroundings and how nature is so integrated with the City of Sarnia,” he said.

Sottosanti said residents shouldn’t contact police if they see a coyote unless the animal appears to be ill.
