Swimming ends on Midsummer Day in Budapest, but the World Cup continues throughout the next week with, among other things, water polo and swimming.
How many positive cases the Canadian national team has suffered has not been made public, but the swimming site Swimswam refers to a statement from the Canadian Water Polo Federation:
“After careful consideration and on the advice of our medical team, after discussions with the players and Canada’s team manager for covid-19, we have made the difficult decision that the men’s team will withdraw from the rest of the World Cup in Budapest.”
Eight swimmers have also been affected by positive covid 19 falls, including the Australian talent Lani Pallister who took bronze in the 1,500 meters. She had the second fastest time in the 800 meter freestyle trials, but missed the final on Friday night due to her positive test.
Several national teams, including Australia, have started using mouth guards in the swimming arena and the organizer quickly decided that all journalists must also wear them in interviews with the athletes. In the past, mouth protection has been voluntary.
