Like every year, new candidate words are adopted by French dictionaries. And the theme of health is no exception. Discover the new words that will appear in the 2024 editions!
Reflecting the evolution of our society, new words appear in dictionary editions each year, according to their popular use. Health being more and more a subject of concern, it was normal for certain words to appear in the new editions of Larousse and Petit Robert. Here are those who have become officially admitted.
Covid, covid
Both noun and adjective, covid is used to simply refer to a person with Covid. which represents a majority of French people.
Ecoanxiety
Used for a few years now, eco-anxiety refers to the anxiety linked to the feeling of helplessness in the face of contemporary environmental issues, in particular global warming. In a recent survey, 67% of French people were eco-anxious.
Nutriscore
Visible on the packaging of food products transformed to assess the nutritional qualities, thanks to a code of colors and letters, the nutriscore will now appear in the Larousse.
PLS
The PLS, an acronym that has long designated the lateral safety position in first aid is put in place on any unconscious but breathing person. Be reassured, however, if you hear your son/daughter say that he was in PLS during the day: in popular language, being in PLS now means “to be exhausted, to feel bad”.
misgender
As the question of gender is increasingly debated in France, its lexical field is also developing. Thus, misgendering, which will now appear in the Petit Robert, designates the fact of attributing to a person, voluntarily or not, a gender in which the person does not recognize themselves.
Ghosting
Finally, on the mental health side, the word ghoster also makes its entry into the Petit Robert. A verb that induces the fact of disappearing overnight without giving the slightest sign of life. An attitude that can leave the other in deep disarray.
