The spread of covid-19 is still considered to be significant, the Public Health Agency writes in its latest weekly report.
At the same time, the curves show that the spread is tapering off a bit, says Matti Sällberg, professor and vaccine researcher at the Karolinska Institutet. But warns that holidays and Christmas celebrations can mean increased infection around the country.
– It’s cold outside, we bundle up more, we are more people on a smaller surface and then there are significantly better conditions for the spread of infection. And then the variants we have are also very, very contagious, says Matti Sällberg.
The flu is on the rise and epidemic season for the RS virus is underway
The flu season is also underway, although it is still at a low level. However, the spread of infection is expected to pick up speed at the turn of the year.
And at the beginning of December announced the Public Health Agency that it is judged that the RS virus epidemic is underway for the season and that the spread is expected to increase.
– We constantly have a bit of bubbling of the RS virus, which mainly affects very young children and also old people, says Matti Sällberg.
So far during the season, a total of 775 confirmed cases of RS virus have been reported within the healthcare system, writes the Public Health Agency. The number of cases in the last four weeks is at roughly the same levels as last year.
“Don’t spread infection”
Matti Sällberg encourages everyone who belongs to a risk group to get vaccinated before Christmas and urges everyone with symptoms to stay at home.
– Make sure to stay at home and instead wait until a safe time when you are symptom-free and then take the opportunity to meet grandma and grandpa, he concludes.
