If the decline of the Covid-19 epidemic is still ongoing, the Deltacron variant has just been detected in France. Public Health France reports ten cases identified on January 21. Asked about the subject, Dr Gérald Kierzek calls for calm.

We have been talking about it since the beginning of the year: the Omicron and Delta variants of Covid-19 have created a hybrid variant, called Deltacron. Spotted in several countries around the world, it had not yet been detected in France. It is now done, the Deltacron variant was identified at least ten times last January.

Ten cases identified, according to Public Health France

According to the document from Public Health France which reports the information, ten cases have been recorded in France. “As of 01/21/2022, 10 sequences that may correspond to a Delta/Omicron recombinant have been identified in Franceexplains SPF.Detection during Flash sequencing surveys and the geographic dispersion of cases may suggest that this recombinant is potentially already circulating at very low levels since mid-January.”, also indicates Public Health France. However, it specifies that additional analyzes are in progress to confirm these results.

    France, but not only

France is not the only country where the presence of this recombinant variant has been detected. Already in mid-February, he had been spotted in the United Kingdom, Denmark and the Netherlands. Deltacron does “subject to heightened surveillance”because it is difficult to “predict their characteristics, in relation to the variants from which they are derived, and therefore their impact on public health in the event of circulation in the population”adds Public Health France.

“We must not panic at the slightest warning”

Asked about the subject, Dr. Gérald Kierzek once again recommends to stop playing scare. “It is a normal evolution. Like any virus, there will be changes, variants. But all this must remain in the scientific domain. Do not panic at the slightest warning. We reversed things: we panic at the slightest appearance of a variant when we should leave virological monitoring to scientists and take the necessary measures if necessary. Today we do the opposite. So let’s stop this media circus with each new variant and let the cohabitation with the virus take place, naturally”.
