The Covid-19 epidemic is getting worse and worse. And with it come the last obligations, including the compulsory wearing of a mask in transport. Olivier Véran, Minister of Health, has just confirmed that it will no longer be compulsory from May 16.
We go from “mandatory” to “recommended”. As for closed places, wearing a mask in transport will no longer be compulsory from Monday May 16 but simply “recommended”.
Bus, metro, but also taxis, trains and planes
This announcement obviously concerns public transport in cities such as buses and metros, but also taxis, trains and planes.
The confirmation of this lifting of the obligation was made by the Minister of Health Olivier Véran at the end of the final Council of Ministers which was held today, the last of President Macron’s first five-year term. A “more appropriate” measure given the current health situation in the country: contamination and hospitalizations down sharply, even if the epidemic is not over.

Other restrictions remain in effect
This is why the Minister remains cautious in his remarks and indicates that if it is no longer compulsory, the mask remains “recommended”. Other restrictions are still maintained, such as the health pass, via a vaccination QR code or a negative test, to access health establishments welcoming a fragile public.
In addition, unvaccinated caregivers are still not reintegrated into their services, even if according to Olivier Véran the High Health Authority should be consulted on this subject. Finally, the Minister of Health evokes a resumption of the vaccination campaign at the start of the next school year, in September, in the event of the appearance of new variants of the virus.
The health situation, which is constantly improving, allows us to lift the obligation to wear a mask in all transport, from Monday. It remains recommended, especially for fragile people.
