Sports cardiologists warn against practicing moderate to intense sports activity in the days following vaccination or Covid infection. The reason: a high risk of myocarditis.
Take care of yourself after a Coronavirus vaccination or an infection. These are the recommendations of sports cardiologists who met during the 32nd European Days of the French Society of Cardiology in Paris a few weeks ago.
According to doctors, engaging in physical activity within 7 days of vaccination or Covid infection could cause inflammation of the heart muscle. This could get worse after coming into contact with the virus.
A risk of myocarditis linked to the virus
Cardiologists talk about risk of myocarditis in case of moderate to intense sports activity (running, cycling, fitness, bodybuilding, etc.). Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle that causes shortness of breath, palpitations, and chest pain. According to Dr. Alexandre Duparc, cardiologist at the University Hospital Center (CHU) of Toulouse, interviewed by The Dispatch“we find myocarditis in about 1 case of Covid in 10,000, that’s a lot. It also seems that myocarditis due to Covid-19 is more serious than that induced by other viruses, with more frequent complications.“
In order to avoid any kind of complications, doctors expand their recommendations and advise to do not play sports after a positive test even without symptoms. In case of chest pain and symptoms similar to those of myocarditis, it is advisable to consult a doctor as soon as possible in order to be taken care of. This infection is detected by MRI imaging and requires a sports stoppage for three to six months.
