The number of cases, which was 4.3 million last week, increased to 4.9 million this week.
This is the highest number since statistics began in April 2020.
The increase is estimated to be due to the lifting of Covid-19 measures and the more contagious Omicron BA.2 sub-variant.
The UK’s National Statistical Institute calculates the number of cases in the country by regularly randomly testing thousands of households.
The policy of distributing free rapid antigen tests to anyone in the country has ended as of today.
People with Covid-19 are advised to be isolated at home for five days while the quarantine requirement is lifted.
Three days is recommended for those under the age of 18.
Everyone is entitled to a third dose of vaccine across the country.
People over the age of 75 and those with immune system problems can also receive the fourth dose of vaccine.
