A new study warns of the increased risk of cardiovascular complications one year after being affected by Covid-19, even in the case of a non-severe form.

Although the risks of cardiovascular sequelae have already been suspected in people affected by Covid-19, a new study clarifies this danger today. Published in the journal Nature Medicine, on February 7, 2022, the results of this cohort led by Washington University in St. Louis (United States), warn of long-term cardiovascular sequelae even one year after a Sars-Cov2 infection.

The researchers explain that they first identified the cases of 153,760 patients who were infected with Covid-19 in the American data from the US Department of Veteran Affairs. They then compared the health outcomes of these people with those of people who had not been infected from two other studies.

The health check-ups of all these people over a year have enabled them to note that the risk of cardiovascular accident of any kind (thrombosis, heart attack, cardiac arrhythmia, stroke, etc.) increases and persists well beyond 30 days. after infection, even up to a year later.

“These risks are also valid in people who have not been hospitalized”, add the scientists. They are also present in patients who have never been at risk of cardiovascular disease.

In an interview for Science News, Professor Al-Aly Ziyad worries about the long-term consequences of the latest coronavirus. “These results are not good. Covid-19 can lead to serious cardiovascular complications and death. The heart had a hard time recovering from the infection. People will be affected for years.”
