A court in the Libyan capital Tripoli has sentenced 17 members of the Islamic State to death. The persons have joined the terrorist group and, according to the prosecutors, committed various atrocities in its name.
More prison sentences
The court also sentences two people to life imprisonment and 14 people to shorter prison sentences.
According to a statement from the court, the terrorists committed their crimes in and around the city of Sabratha in the northwestern part of the country. They are convicted of murdering a total of 53 people, destroying buildings and kidnapping people. The nationality of the convicted is not clear from the statement.
Power vacuum gives space
Libya has been torn apart by conflict since dictator Muammar Gadaffi was overthrown and killed in 2011. The power vacuum has given way to armed groups, including extremists such as IS.
