GLENCOE — A family home in Adelaide Metcalfe Township was destroyed after a garage fire blew into the rest of the house Tuesday morning, forcing a couple and their dog to flee.
The couple was watching TV in the home at 4646 Calvert Dr., about halfway between Glencoe and Strathroy, when flames suddenly spread into their home just after 9 am, Adelaide Metcalfe fire chief Dan Parker said.
Two children weren’t home at the time and no one was hurt, he said.
“It’s pretty much a total loss, approximately $800,000,” Parker said of the damage to the home, garage and two vehicles.
It’s not clear what started the fire in the garage, Parker said.
“There was a fire door between the garage and the laundry room. It blew open and the fire got into the main part of the house,” he added. “We figure it had been burning for over an hour before we got called.”
The fire call came in about 9:13 am and by the time crews arrived about eight minutes later, the kitchen was ablaze, Parker said.
About two dozen firefighters from the Kerwood station in Adelaide Metcalfe and the Glencoe station in Southwest Middlesex knocked down the fire in about an hour, he said.
Firefighters were still at the scene in the afternoon, battling flames in firewood stored in the basement, Parker said.
OPP and township officials closed Calvert Drive between Kerwood and Napier roads for some time as crews fought the fire.
